The History of Fly Fishing

Posted under Sport, Travel by admin on Tuesday 16 August 2011 at 6:15 am

No one really  knows when fly fishing first began. It is believed that it existed long ago in ancient times.  One of the earliest written references to fly fishing was made by Claudius Aelianus. In 200 AD he wrote of people that were fishing in a river with a hand made fly. He described how they attached red wool and feathers to a hook. The rods they used and the sting attached were each about six feet long. These people were the ancient Macedonians. Throughout history from Aelianus to the present people have been writing about fly fishing, and many thousands of others have been enjoying the sport.

The Princess of Soapwell, English, was an avid fly fisherman. Her name was Dame Juliana Berners and she was a master at her sport.  At the time Columbus was searching for the New World, Dame Juliana was publishing an extensive treatise on the art of fly fishing. In her treatise  she described the twelve styles of fly and included extensive instructions on how to tie them. She   patterns were put into categories by the month that they were used  most often.

She also described the rod that was used for fly fishing during that time. It measured about 18 feet long and was  very flexible, The rods  were made of several different types of wood which added to their flexibility. Their lines were short, by today’s  standards, and were made of hand braided horse hair. The general rule of the time was that the line should not be longer then the fishing rod. The line was tied to the tip of the pole. (more…)

Home Improvement Sweepstakes

Posted under House&Home by admin on Tuesday 2 August 2011 at 7:52 am

A home improvement sweepstake is like a competition. Many large electrical stores and mortgage companies offer these kinds of sweepstakes where the most typical prize is a home improvement or new home luxury that can be won by anyone that enters! They are not pre selected winners all winners are chosen at random. Home repair stores are the usual culprits of these home improvement sweepstakes, the usually run competitions monthly and the winner gets a brand new home makeover courtesy of the store! This is a fantastic way to generate sales as you can usually only enter the competition by purchasing certain items in the shop keeper’s store!

Other kinds of home improvement sweepstakes are just plain entry forms where you select the competition that you want to enter for example, a life times guarantee on all electrical appliances, a free power roller attachment, free gift cards worth so much money and free deliveries on selected items; all of these are sweepstakes. Winterizing Your Swimming Pool

Posted under Home Decorating, House&Home by admin on Tuesday 19 July 2011 at 2:36 am

Once fall ends and winter begins to rear it’s ugly head, it will be time to shut your pool down.  When shutting your pool down, the first step will be the water.  You should begin by checking your pH level, and making sure that it is around 7.5.  If it isn’t, simply add some dry acid.  You should also check your chlorine as well, and use a winterizing product to make sure that your pool will be protected from algae during the few months that you won’t be swimming.

During the winter months, you should run your pump for around 6 hours a day, to ensure that the algae doesn’t settle in.  You should also go ahead and check for any types of leaks as well, then switch your skimmer valve off and let the water drain to around 6 inches below the skimmer’s bottom.  This way, you’ll have the preferred amount of water in your pool.

If you are using a summer cover, take it down and give it a good cleaning using fresh water and a pressure washer if you have access to one.  Once you have cleaned the cover really good, go ahead and put it in your building or garage and break out your winter cover.  When you put your winter cover on the pool, make sure that you have plenty of tension on the cover, to prevent anything from getting under it. You could very well find here the peace and quiet needed  for your work. Also, the new addition can be converted into a music studio if you put some simple sound proofing measures into place.

In order to start planning for your garage addition, first prepare a budget and then hire a professional because this is a complex project. Also, you may need to hire an architect to help you with the construction plans.

Caring Properly for your Fruit Tree

Posted under Home Garden by admin on Wednesday 1 June 2011 at 9:35 am

If you have just recently planted a new fruit tree, I think it is safe to assume you are not yet an expert on the subject. More fruit trees die in their beginning years due to poor care habits than any disease or pestilence. Therefore it is vital that you understand how to care for trees in a way that will ensure their immediate success as well as future good health.

During the first stages of the tree’s life, the roots, trunk, and branches have not yet fully developed to a self supporting strength. Therefore if your tree is growing fruits, occasionally the combined weight is enough to snap off an entire branch. If this is the case, you should provide external support for your branches – prop them up with boards, or tie them to something at a higher altitude. As long as you can provide your tree the support it needs in these early years, it should grow to be independent in no time at all.

Proper nutrition is not only necessary for the production of healthy fruits, but is also necessary for the tree to survive longer than one season. The exact specifications vary with the area, climate, and type of tree, but I’ve found that there is no better source than a nursery employee. Maybe they’re just eager to sell you the right type of fertilizer, but in my experience they are almost never wrong.  Just inform them about the conditions your tree is living in and how healthy it is looking, and they should be able to help you find something to improve the state of your tree.
